Thank You!

First, and foremost, I must thank my great aunt, Elizabeth “Bess” Gartlan Kirkland, BA (as she signed her name!) 1889-1972, for preserving all the Gartlan family documents we still have, and for spending 40 years conducting original research.

Add then to:

Ian Gartlan of Melbourne, Australia, Don Gartlan of Palm Springs, California, and Jone Carlson of Palm Bay, Florida all of whom have a James Gartlan in Carrickmacross and continue to help pursue  a common connection.

Jenny Gartlan of Belfast and Sally Rusby of  Coquitlam, B.C, the only descendents of James Gartlan of Monalty I’ve found so far, who have provided much original documentation.

And more recently, Kevin Gartlan, one of the Gartlans still living in Carrickmacross, who hs begun a genealogic centre in Carrickmacross and who has sent me literally dozens of historic files.

Deidre McEvoy (no relation!) of Dublin, who scoured the National Library of Ireland and sent copious transcripts of James of Monalty’s descendents.

Howard Sargent of Parkersburg, West Virginia who sent details of Thomas Gartlan’s times in Parkersburg.

James Gartlan in his U.S. Army uniform – Tintype, 1863

This Blog/Website focuses on some of the Gartlan families who lived in and around Carrickmacross, County Monahan, Ireland, and eventually migrated around the world.

While there are still Gartlans living there, many others immigrated to England, Australia, Canada, and the U.S. in the 1800s.

My great, great, grandfather, James Gartlan, was born in Carrickmacross in 1823 and immigrated to Canada in the early 1840s and a good part of this web site focuses on him and his descendants living mainly in and around Stayner, Ontario

For many years our family believed that our James was a son of James Gartlan of Monalty, Carrickmacross and even corresponded with his descendants.  Now, however, it is clear that our James was not related at that level.

In the course of my research, I have found 5 other people who have a James Gartlan from Carrickmacross and surrounds in their ancestry. We continue to search for our common connections.
